MPS get Pedal Ready

Last week kids, staff and parents at Masterton Primary had a busy and fun time during their Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) week. They had many educational outdoor activities planned throughout the week including a Bike Fun Day at Henley Lake.

On Wednesday, approximately 85 students arrived at Henley Lake raring to go. The students were divided into groups and spent the day rotating around multiple stations at the lake.

They were provided unique opportunities to learn mountain bike skills and drills and have a go on the nearby BMX course with their peers and with expert cycle instructors. Students also enjoyed playing cycle games to build up riding confidence followed by a group ride around the lake.

Pedal Ready cycle skills instructors were present to lead the cycling activities. Pedal Ready is currently accepting school bookings to run free, fun and interactive cycle skills training sessions. Check out their website for more info! www.pedalready.org.nz

“If the children’s enjoyment was anything to go by, then the day was 100% a success!” says Claire Hodge, Pedal Ready schools co-ordinator.

“Kids are more inclined to choose activities and adopt behaviours which they have positive associations with, so it is really important that they are encouraged to ride their bikes, and practice their skills, regularly in a fun environment”.

There is a lot to experience while biking around Henley Lake. Whether it be watching the birdlife in the lake and wetlands, listening to the swans squawking, smelling the nearby BBQ, and enjoying the cooling shade and breeze under the trees. Masterton turned on its typically fabulous weather, making the day all the more enjoyable.

Big thanks to the Wairarapa Road Safety Trust (Bruce and Holly) for your support and for assisting with the bike loan, to Pedal Ready for supporting the event with cycle instructors and last but certainly not least, to the staff and parents for organising and helping run this fantastic event.
