Beyond Movin'March

April 18, 2016

St Anthony’s School children come from all over the Eastern suburbs to get to school in Seatoun. Some travel through the tunnel from Strathmore, Miramar, Kilbirnie and even Hataitai. But that hasn’t stopped them from joining the Movin’ March initiative, and becoming active on their way to school.

When the invitation email came across Principal Jennifer Ioannou’s desk last year, she thought Movin’ March would be something that would excite her students, as well as benefit them and their parents.

As part of the solution to a major congestion problem outside her school gate, Jennifer decided to introduce a walking school bus route from Strathmore shops to her school on Ludlam Street, one day a week.

Walking alongside the students, there were ample learning opportunities. Jennifer could model good road safety practices, including finding the safe places to cross.

“The parents at St Anthony’s have been very supportive, some walking with the “bus” from Strathmore, and one father cycled with his 6 year old son all the way from Hataitai” Jennifer says.

To encourage more children to consider cycling, St Anthony’s has booked Pedal Ready skills training for their Year 5-8 students. The young ones won’t miss out either with a Wheels Afternoon scheduled for the last day of term.

“Students come to school and they are ready to learn.” Principal Ioannou says. She’d love to keep up the momentum throughout the winter months.

Her next steps are to evaluate what has been achieved with her staff and see how the school can build on the progress to date.
