Beat the School Run Chaos with Movin'March

February 6, 2018

The start of the school year often brings mixed emotions for parents. While some look forward to getting back to a routine, many dread the return of the manic school run.

You know the one – that feeling of stress as you rush out the door five minutes late negotiate traffic and the general chaos outside school and try to find a park. What if there was a way to avoid the mayhem so you can start your day less stressed or even find extra time for yourself?

Walking to school could be your answer. Whether it’s once a week or once a month, it can help you change gear and experience the journey to school in a different way.

Walking to school with your child allows you to slow down and have the conversations we often run out of time for. It’s a great opportunity to teach children road safety skills while getting fresh air and exercise before the start of a busy day (see our benefits video).

If it’s too far to walk or you don’t have time, try parking further away from school. You can experience the same benefits even walking part of the way. Older children can walk the shorter distance on their own or meet up with friends. They relish the independence and social time while you avoid the school gate chaos and have time for a coffee before work!

If you’re ready to give walking to school a go, Vic Health and the New Zealand Transport Agency have developed great guides for getting your family ready. We’ve also put together tips and advice for common concerns parents have about the journey to school. And if you need a little encouragement, make sure your school is participating in Movin’March 2018 – there are some great prizes up for grabs!

Movin’March: 5 – 29 March 2018

Movin’March is a month-long event encouraging families to walk, scoot or bike to school. Children that walk or bike collect stamps on their WOW Passport to go in the draw to win one of six $300 Avanti vouchers. Parents can also win a family pass to their favourite Wellington Wild Things destinations for snapping a photo of their journey to school.

Find out more and get your school signed up at www.movinmarch.com.
