Fancy Feet at Boulcott

March 14, 2018

The weather didn’t put Boulcott school students off on their WOW Family day last Friday when they celebrated with a fancy feet parade. Teachers painted their feet, students decorated their shoes as outrageously as possible and a senior “greenie” students” group stamped Movin’March “passports” for participating students to go in the draw to win one of $300 Avanti vouchers.

Students paraded their fancy feet to rousing walking tunes, while lead teacher Gaylene Nankivell and Hutt City Council School Travel Planner Sherie Wright handed out spot prizes to a few outstanding entries. “It’s a great way to put the focus on walking to school. We’re amazed how many families are doing things differently during Movin’March and are thinking about how they can make those changes stick” says Sherie.

Sherie helped a team of ‘greenie students’ paint the school’s walking “pou” which will be installed in the coming weeks along a nearby walking route. The walking “pou” marks a place that children and parents can meet up and walk together that’s away from the school gate. This helps reduce congestion and road safety concerns. “It’s a simple thing families can do. Parking away from the school gate and installing a “pou” creates a positive belonging with the school. The students are really struck by the fact that the “pou” is a permanent fixture that may still be there when they’re parents themselves”.

This year, ninety one schools have registered for Greater Wellington Regional Council’s “Movin’March” campaign which is also supported by local councils. More information from www.movin-march.com.
