Plimmerton School students gave the thumbs up today as Samuel Wood (7 yrs) was presented with a certificate and Avanti voucher for $300 as the lucky draw winner for Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Movin’March competition. Samuel was the district winner for the Porirua area and Principal Mike Forrest and Deputy Principal Jill Symonds congratulated him on his win.
Greater Wellington Regional Council’s School Travel Coordinator, Kirsty Barr went along to Friday’s assembly to give the school some Movin’March results. Overall, nearly 25,000 students took part in this year’s initiative, resulting in approximately 60,000 kilometres being walked or wheeled by students in the Greater Wellington area over March.
Plimmerton School students did their bit as well, with around 1250 kilometres being walked or wheeled, equating to walking or biking from Plimmerton School to Auckland and back! Kirsty says Movin’March was a big success this year with over 91 schools taking part.
“We had a 30% increase in participation and that means more kilometres are being walked or wheeled every year. More families are thinking about other ways to travel and not just in March but throughout the year. It’s great to see this level of participation and we just want more schools to follow suit.”
