Kenakena goes Canine Crazy!

Kenakena School celebrated the middle of Movin’March with their “Walk your Dog to School” Day for the fourth year running. Families with dogs of all shape, size and colour walked together to school and gathered for a meet and greet on the fields before class. Over 30 dogs and their families took part.

Walk your Dog to School day is a favourite Movin’March event for Kenakena School. Teacher Shona McDonald comments “it’s a highlight for us, the dogs are never any trouble and their owners are pretty well behaved too! It’s just a bit of fun and a great reminder that walking to school can be enjoyed by sharing that journey with family and pets”.

Kenakena School is one of 124 schools taking part in Movin’March this year which represents well over half the primary schools in the Wellington Region. Students have their “passports” stamped and go in the draw to win one of 6 x $300 Avanti vouchers. Other prizes such as Micro-scooters and family passes to fun Wellington destinations are up for grabs with a daily Facebook photo competition.

Kenakena School is planning a final “all-in” event on Friday 22nd March to encourage all families to walk or “wheel” to school, leaving their car at home or a distance away from the school so they can walk and get their passports stamped. Students, staff and parents are encouraged to decorate bikes, scooters, feet and themselves and enjoy a sausage sizzle before class.

In its tenth year, Movin’March is organised by Greater Wellington Regional Council in partnership with Kapiti Coast District Council and runs from 1-29 March.
