Heidi Berkenbosch, a parent from Korokoro School led a popular Wednesday “walking school bus” along with other parents and more than fourteen students. Undaunted by the hill walk, “passengers” and “drivers” were rewarded with picture-perfect views of Wellington Harbour along the way.
Being a regular Movin’March school, Korokoro School is seeing more students walking than ever before. Principal Martin Hookham says “We haven’t had a walking bus for a good 18 months at our school and we’re delighted that our parents are trying this out, it’s great timing with Movin’March”. Martin adds that there is another walking group that come to school from the other side of Korokoro and students in general are having a great time filling up their “WOW” passports to go in the draw to win a $300 Avanti voucher.
Heidi plans to continue walking with children at other times of the year when she can and hopes other parents will keep the momentum going also. Hutt City Council has provided support to Heidi in setting up the bus and keeping it going.
