In the Neighbourhood

March 26, 2019

Papakowhai School organised their annual walk to the Aotea Lagoon last Thursday to mark their first year of participating in Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Movin’March event. Movin’March encourages and celebrates walking and “wheeling” to school at primary schools across the region.  Nearly 500 students walked in fancy dress and the colours of their whanau groups in brilliant sunshine, armed with posters, placards and flags promoting Movin’March to their neighbourhood.

A picnic lunch and spot prizes presented by the school’s enviro group was followed by fun, active games organised by senior students. Lead teacher Jill Clibborn says “It has been amazing school event with a team of teachers and senior students driving activities with the whole school embracing the fun-side of this initiative.  It’s also made a difference to our school entrance with less congestion at pick up and drop off times.

This walk was a great way to connect Papakowhai School to our neighbourhood in a colourful way and to celebrate Movin’March for the whole school”

Over half of the primary schools took part in Movin’March across the region this year with an estimated 34,000 students walking or wheeling to school.  This year has seen 35% increase in the number of Porirua schools registering in this month-long campaign.
