Kelson School's walking school bus gets the tick

More than 100 children and their families turned out for Kelson School’s walking school bus last Monday to celebrate active travel to school as part of their Movin’March celebrations.

Mayor Campbell Barry and Sherie Wright from Hutt City Council joined Principal Judy Pemberton at the Becks Close playground to lead the downhill walk for families from upper Kelson.

Meanwhile Lead Teacher Brent Skinnon picked up the pace for those meeting at the Kelson dairy and walked his group uphill to the school, where both groups converged. Students walked and scooted alongside grandparents, parents and younger siblings and walking bus ‘passengers’ received spot prizes at their journey’s end.

Mayor Barry congratulated the school for their massive Movin’March efforts and Judy Pemberton noted that over a third of the school’s roll participated on the day. Judy says “We have a fantastic school community and there’s a lot of interest from parents to continue a walking bus beyond March which we totally support– there are just so many benefits in walking to school for the kids, and it also reduces congestion at our gate”.
