‘How to’ guides for safe and active travel initiatives in your school community
Park & Stride schemes create drop-off points so whānau can safely allow their children to walk or scoot the last few metres to school. Walking or scooting from a Park & Stride location gives children a little independence and fresh air before school as well as reducing congestion around the school gate.
The Active Travel Schools' Toolkit is packed with ‘how to’ guides for safe and active travel initiatives in your school community. Collected from successful NZ and international programmes, choose your favourite ideas to increase the number of students walking, cycling and scooting; reduce the ‘chaos’ at the school gate and improve road safety skills.
Walk or Wheel is an incentive programme that aims to get students excited about walking and wheeling to school. Tickets are clipped and prizes given out to students who regularly walk, cycle or scooter. A little incentive goes a long way towards encouraging parents to allow their children to walk or wheel!
Super Safe Strider is a road safety skills checklist for families to make sure children have the skills they need to walk to school safely. Once signed off, students receive a Super Safe Strider certificate at assembly. Families can also use the Map My Journey activity to plan a safe route to school.
